Ever since rearranging our art room on Mother’s Day (don’t ask), I’ve been relishing in having a workspace that is just mine.
Prior to the reorganization, the kids and I would share the area and it left me feeling really angry and frustrated 99% of the time since they had a habit of not cleaning up after themselves.
Post reorganization, the kids have their very own space to create and I have the space to do whatever the heck I want. Which has mostly been journaling and doing tarot spreads to help me flush out a new idea I’ve had for a business, clearing out our stash of watercolor paintings to turn into more dot note cards, and dipping my toes into the paper flower world.
Aside from giving myself a nasty second degree burn on my finger, I have been loving every second of that time spent creating and reflecting.
I’ve also found myself becoming quite obsessed with making paper mâché vases out of old jars (mostly of the pickle variety). There is something really satisfying about the intentional slowness of the process and watching them go from trash to treasure in a matter of weeks. I’m also hoping that they will be the perfect container for the paper flower bouquets I’m working on for teacher gifts.
They seem to be quite perfect for the silk flower variety already:
What started out as a really frustrating situation (the kids never cleaning up their messes and making me avoid my own creative space) has turned into something that fosters more joy and creativity in my life. Something that I’ve been chasing for a really long time now.
Is there anywhere in YOUR life — physically or mentally — that needs a little breathing room or space for new things to grow? It could be in your calendar, your home, your relationships, your thoughts, and/or your work environment.
Whatever it is, here’s to a lifetime of making the space for all of the things that bring you joy and/or a smile to your face. Goodness knows we could all use more of that.
X+O,
Emily
